Hawaii Shaman Christopher Ilo
Frequently Asked Questions
What is your vision for your work?
It is my great honor and joy to hold the space and facilitate for people to release their fears and embrace their true nature as love.
What is your definition of a Shaman?
Shamans could be considered the first holistic life coaches. In indigenous cultures they often fulfilled the roles that in our modern society are performed by a priest, psychologist or doctor. The primary duty of the shaman was to bridge the worlds of matter and energy, the spiritual and the physical. In many cultures around the world Shamans have played an important role for millennia. Sometimes called shaman, sometimes medicine man or woman, witch doctor, kahuna, or other term of respect. Nowadays, shaman is somewhat of a generic term encompassing many traditions, each with their own history, techniques, rituals and beliefs. The thread that connects them all is that the Shaman walks in both worlds, between the seen and unseen.
What is Toltec?
The original Toltecs were an ancient civilization in Central Mexico. They founded the city of Teotihuacan, which is translated as where men become gods. In essence, the entire city was energetically laid out as an ancient divinity school, the graduates from which became Toltec teachers. Toltec translates as artist of the spirit, and Toltec practitioners could be found in all walks of life, from healers to engineers because the Toltecs did not perceive a separation between spiritual and scientific.
How long have you been practising Toltec Shamanism and why did you choose this particular path?
In my twenties - during the 80s and 90s - I read all the Carlos Castaneda books, which did a lot to reintroduce the Toltec philosophy to the world. The Toltec teachings resonated with me, and I knew intuitively it was something I wanted to investigate for myself. What intrigued me most were the twin philosophies of personal freedom and personal power, which enable a student to define their own journey, rather than abide by a strictly enforced dogma to be followed unquestioningly. I was first introduced to the Toltec tradition through personal experience and training in 1996, and since then I have studied with several teachers, including the well-known author of "The Four Agreements", don Miguel Ruiz.
Do you use any consciousness altering substances in your work?
No. My work is powerful and effective on its own, and I have not found it necessary to incorporate those substances.
Do you cast spells or curses?
No. I believe in personal power and freedom, and with that comes great responsibility. Casting spells or curses binds the energy of the sender, as much or more, than the person it is directed at. There is a law of return: what you send out you get back (usually multiplied). I prefer to tell a healing story and work from the heart, reminding people of the love and light that they are.
Will working with you conflict with my personal religious beliefs?
No. The only belief that is required is in the possibility of healing. This is not a religion, and you will never be asked to give up your faith. Some people even find that working with me helps to deepen their own faith as we work together to bring about their own personal experience of the Divine.
What is your healing philosophy?
It is my belief that it is our natural state to be healthy and balanced. Healing is all about remembering who and what we are. Even though we use the term healer, in actual fact, nobody can heal another person. If a client gives their power away to the practitioner, even if they experience a relief of symptoms or apparent healing right away, the imbalance can return. What I do is create the space to facilitate the client's healing of themselves, through the clearing, balancing and reclaiming of personal power. Disease is not simply a group of symptoms, there is always an underlying cause which needs to be addressed in order to achieve lasting and vibrant health.
What does shamanism have to offer that mainstream medicine does not?
In general, mainstream medicine tends to treat the symptoms in isolation of people's spiritual, mental and emotional states. Shamanism, on the other hand, looks at bridging all of those areas to facilitate lasting healing and change for the client. Shamanistic treatments can be complimentary to western medicine practices, and be undertaken at the same time.
Can you work with clients long-distance?
Yes. Several of my techniques and coaching/counselling can be facilitated remotely by phone.
